  • UNAA Economic Sanctions and Human Rights in Iran and Russia

    A panel of experts discussed the humanitarian impact of economic sanctions at Griffith University’s South Bank Campus.

    Recent human rights violations in Iran have triggered the international community to implement further economic sanctions against the nation, which may have further dire consequences for everyday citizens. The Russian conflict is a current war on the doorstep of NATO, raising fears of nuclear warfare. The Russian economy is suffering from economic sanctions: trade is declining while inflation is rising. While the sanctions target the Russian elite, the impact on poorer Russians will be extreme.

    A comparison of the benefits and disadvantages of sanctions was examined to conclude to what degree experts find sanctions successful as a foreign policy tool.

  • UNAA SDG Skills Social

    The end of the year was celebrated with a highly interactive and engaging event centred around creative thinking and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    Young professionals met like-minded people and developed their problem-solving skills whilst overlooking the Brisbane river. Whether from university or industry, this workshop was not to be missed.

  • UNAA Doug Everingham UN Week Lecture

    What is possible for UN reforms faced with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the threat of nuclear war and the journey from the NPT to the Nuclear Ban Treaty?

    These urgent challenges will be the topic of Professor Thakur’s talk and discussion at the event. All welcome.

    Professor Ramesh Thakur is Director of the Centre for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (CNND) in the Crawford School, The Australian National University and Co-Convenor of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN). He was Vice Rector and Senior Vice Rector of the United Nations University (and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations) from 1998–2007.

  • GGIRS x UQUNSA: Artificial Intelligence MUN

    Griffith Government and International Relations Society (GGIRS) presents Model United Nations in collaboration with the University of Queensland United Nations Student Association (UQUNSA).

    The Topic is Artificial intelligence; we will simulate the general assembly, with each delegate assigned a country to debate the topic.

    Some countries may have more relevance in their AI industry than others. Therefore, research your selected country's AI development or policies and ethics.

  • SGIR: Pathways to Success Event Series

    Pathways to Success event series includes two workshops leading up to a gala networking dinner event at Parliament House which will be attended by Industry executives, University staff and fellow GIR students.

    For each workshop you attend and submit the homework task, you will earn a $25 gift voucher! Attend both sessions, and that’s $50! This offer is for the first 90 students to submit their work.

    All students attending at least one workshop will receive a free ticket to the gala networking dinner. Your gift cards will be handed out at the dinner.

  • UNAA International Day of Peace Lecture

    Professor Megan Davis will deliver the lecture in St John’s Cathedral with her talk focused on the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

    Professor Megan Davis is an Aboriginal Australian activist and international human rights lawyer. She was the first Indigenous Australian to sit on a United Nations body and was Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. She is known for her work on the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

    The Australia-China Emerging Leaders Summit (ACELS) is ACYA’s premier event to unite, upskill and engage a new generation of literate Australia-China leaders, providing an intensive and immersive program offering opportunities to connect with business, government, and industry leaders to shape the future of this bilateral relationship and the region at large.

    GGIRS’ first iteration of Mock Parliament will focus on the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, how Queensland Governments will respond and what adapting to the ‘new normal’ looks like.

  • 2022 Griffith Policy Competition

    The Griffith Policy Competition is excited to announce the 2022 Parliament Jury Panel. Students selected for Round 2 will be able to present their policy brief at Parliament House QLD in front of a jury.

    The policy competition is open to all Griffith students, regardless of their degrees. The policy brief topics are entirely up to students, allowing them to have their voices heard on a topic close to their hearts.

  • UNAA Peacekeepers Day March and Ceremony

    The United Nations Association Australia Queensland Division celebrates 75 years of service and sacrifice by Australian Peacekeepers with our Annual Peacekeepers March and Service. The event will begin at King George Square, Brisbane. From here, participants will march from King George Square to Anzac Square for a 10am ceremony start featuring a reflection from keynote speaker LEUT Kristy Miles, RAN.

    Join GGIRS as we host our first in-house event for 2022, Crisis in the Philippines.

    The year is 2049, and the Philippines stands on the brink of civil war. As the government struggles to maintain law and order between the nation’s toiling masses, communist revolutionaries and Islamic separatists have found their opportunity to free the country from capitalism or religious heresy.

  • The Australia-China Emerging Leaders Summit 14

    The Australia-China Emerging Leaders Summit (ACELS) is ACYA’s signature event, uniting and enriching a new generation of Australia-China literate leaders.

    ACELS 14 will be held online across four days over two consecutive weekends. Participants will discuss highly topical issues in the Australia-China space as part of the intensive four-day program, ultimately fostering a deeper understanding of our two nations and genuine people-to-people connections.

    Participants will be given the unparalleled opportunity to engage with business, diplomatic, cultural and academic leaders in various panels, workshops, seminars, and an array of cultural and social events.

    The 2021 Sydney Model United Nations Conference (SydMUN 2021) is one of Australia's largest annual Model United Nations conferences at the tertiary education level.

    Each year, it brings together hundreds of like-minded students in a simulation of the United Nations to debate and help resolve real-world issues. This year, SydMUN 2021 will be offering three awe-inspiring days and nights of MUN, professional development and meaningful networking at the University of Sydney to "champion our role with the Sustainable Development Goals".

    SydMUN 2021 is facilitated by the Sydney University United Nations, a not-for-profit organisation affiliated with the University of Sydney Union.

    Join us at State Library Queensland for an evening of connection and conversation ahead of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy week.

    COVID-19 has highlighted the need for a holistic approach to achieving media and information literacy for all. As global citizens, our collective competency to think critically and contribute matters carefully - particularly in a landscape of increasing disinformation and political polarisation.

    We’ll explore the role of education and curriculum, the responsibilities of communication, journalism and the media, and the critical importance of public information resources, spaces and services, such as libraries, in reducing vulnerability.

  • UNAA Finding Refuge: The refugee crisis, the role of the UN and what more we can do.

    One per cent of the world’s population is forcibly displaced, or 1 in 95 people. This compares with 1 in 159 in 2010. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified refugees' vulnerability, with much less access to national health and social services. Border closures have also hindered asylum and resettlement opportunities.

    Join the UNAA Young Professionals Queensland Division for our fourth annual event exploring current issues affecting refugees worldwide. We'll look at case studies and hear from a diverse panel to understand the challenges facing refugees, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • UNAA Sustainability in Action: Saving our Great Barrier Reef

    2021 is the United Nations International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, and it couldn't be timelier. In recognition, the UNAA Young Professionals are presenting a national event series on the topic.

    As part of this national series, the Queensland Young Professionals division is hosting an event focusing on the Great Barrier Reef. Human-induced climate change poses a great threat to the Great Barrier Reef, with rising ocean temperatures and higher ocean acidity levels devastating the reef environment and vast amounts of ocean biodiversity.

    This event aims to engage with a diverse range of reef experts for a panel discussion on what we, as individuals and communities, can do to protect the reef in such a crucial time of need.

  • GGIRS: Crisis Simulation

    Join us, the Griffith University Amnesty International (GUAI) is partnering with Griffith Government and International Relations Society (GGIRS) for the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

    To celebrate this day, we will hold a crisis simulation where participants will form teams representing a country's government or Amnesty International. In this simulation, participants will be given a humanitarian crisis and negotiate with relevant actors to create a peaceful resolution.

    This event will be an excellent opportunity for individuals to put their theoretical knowledge into practice, meet new people and have a good debate. We hope to see you there!
